When I updated my Facebook page about making my morning mocha with almond milk, I had no idea of the response I would get! So for those who wanted it, this is how to make a homemade mocha. This is a Saeco espresso machine. French press coffee would be ideal if you don’t have an espresso machine, but regular coffee can work, too. Just make sure you use the strongest roast possible. I’d suggest Starbucks’ Verona or Espresso roasts.
I add the equivalent of one shot glass of espresso to my cup.
Vanilla syrup is the key to making a good mocha. You don’t need a lot of it; I usually use a little more than half a teaspoon for a 16-ounce cup.
Add chocolate syrup. Personally, I don’t like my mocha super sweet; I prefer to be able to taste the coffee still, so how much syrup you add is up to you. (Don’t forget: You can always add more, so start small and taste-test throughout making the mocha.)
I recently discovered almond milk. It has less sugar and less fat than even skim milk (as long as you buy the unsweetened almond milk), and it gives the mocha a creamy, rich texture. Stir all the ingredients together, and heat it in the microwave. (We used to have a milk steamer on the espresso machine, but it broke, unfortunately.)
A little whipped cream never hurt anyone (especially if you use the fat-free kind)!
