Summer shoe wish list

Ahhh, shoes. They’re my happy place when I’m shopping. Even when those jeans don’t fit or that top was totally unflattering, shoes always seem to fit—magically!

Now that summer is here (unofficially), it’s time to move out those boots in favor of something airier and more colorful. Here are some of the shoe trends I have my eye on:

Flat sandals: Not just your typical flip flop, there are some great and unique options out there. Look for sandals with metal details, metallic straps or a pop of color to stand out from the masses.

Gladiator sandals: I’ve loved these sandals for years and kept at least one pair in my closet consistently every year. This year, they’re back in a big way, and while I don’t think I’ll be investing much money into a pair that hits my knees, I have bought a few ankle-length ones to power me through the warm months.

Espadrilles: I’ve completely fallen for these (proof here). I have a pair of wedge espadrilles from seasons past, but flat espadrilles have taken over the streets. Whether you go for solid ones or printed ones (striped and leopard are my favorite), these comfy shoes can take you from weekend to beach in a snap.

Mules: Initially, I was not going anywhere near these, but BCBG, Vince and Target have made some that I don’t hate. They’re the summer-appropriate version of boots.

Here is the one shoe trend you will NOT see me eyeing … ever. At all.

Birkenstocks, man-dals, ugly shoes: No matter what name you give them, it comes down to one fact: These shoes will never be seen on my feet. I don’t even care if the Olsen twins wore theirs with socks in the airport. I won’t touch the ugly shoe trend with a ten-foot pole.

What are your thoughts on the summer shoe trends? Birkenstocks, anyone?
